Murder in the Links Vol. 13
A weekly roundup of links, books I’m reading and other murderous miscellanea
This week I’ve been…
Ordering a copy of From Ted to Tom: The Illustrated Envelopes of Edward Gorey. Edward Gorey is revered in my family. We make a pilgrimage to the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port whenever we’re on the Cape (amazing gift shop, excellent exhibits, but take a Claritin if you, like me, are allergic to cats). A Gashleycrumb Tinies poster hung in my bathroom for years (there’s no better place to contemplate your mortality), and my sister even has a Gorey-inspired tattoo. Needless to say, I’m excited to add this book to my Gorey collection.1
Dreaming about a visit to Bodies in the Bookshop, unfortunately an ocean away. I’m old enough to remember Kate’s Mystery Books, the landmark bookstore in the other Cambridge where seemingly every mystery writer of note on the east coast stopped by back in the day. A mystery-focused bookstore is such a gift to a community. Here’s hoping I make it over in person someday — for now I’ll content myself with haunting their website.
Listening to Book Imprint, a new podcast from the folks from Tea and Murder, the Agatha Christie podcast. A different guest talks about a book that “imprinted” on them at an early age in each episode. It’s fun to think about — what book had the biggest impact on you as a kid? For me, I think it was The Westing Game, which I reread not too long ago. I was surprised by the details I remembered and the things I had completely forgotten, but not by the fact that it still held up. It’s a classic.
Perusing the Gorey House website, I was delighted to discover that they are celebrating Gorey’s centennial with a book club. The first book is The Murder at the Vicarage. Great minds, etc., etc.
