Murder in the Links Vol. 6
A weekly roundup of links, books I’m reading and other murderous miscellanea
This week I’ve been…
Drinking classic Hollywood movie-themed cocktails sourced from Highbrow magazine. The mulled wine from It’s a Wonderful Life is probably most apt for this time of year, but I’m partial to the Knickerbocker from The Thin Man, also set at Christmastime. My advice? Try them all and choose your favorite. ’Tis the season.
Reading this highly-relevant-to-the-interests-of-this-newsletter article on secret passages. It’s got everything a Golden Age reader could need, from priest holes to the attic that inspired Jane Eyre to a library in Austria with multiple hidden doorways.
Perusing the items sold in a recent auction of Raymond Chandler miscellanea, specifically a typed list of things he hated, including, in no special order: aspirin, automotive salesmen and people who talk as if they can’t imagine anyone not listening to them (same, Ray, same). It’s a perfect grinchy holiday read.
Happy reading (and drinking)! We’ll be back on Tuesday with an another Christmas short story, “The Adventure of the Dauphin’s Doll,” by Ellery Queen.
